Teen Issues and How to Cope with Them

Suicide is the third leading cause of death for teenagers, so it is important for teen issues to receive effective therapy that can help teenagers learn ways to deal with their problems and lead successful lives. Therapy is available for a wide range of teen issues, including depression, substance abuse and addiction, excessive anger, low self-esteem, and eating disorders. Even though teens often feel alone when going through these ordeals, there are therapists who have counseled thousands of people with similar issues.

Interpersonal Therapy for Teen Issues

Interpersonal therapy approaches teen issues with the understanding that the root cause of many of these problems lie in the teen’s interpersonal relationships. Most therapies focus on the patient’s thoughts and behaviors. This technique, though, seeks to identify barriers between people and determine more effective ways that they can build healthy relationships.

Interpersonal therapy can often treat teen issues such as substance abuse, depression, and acting out against authority. Many teenagers feel significant anger or helplessness because they are caught between childhood and adulthood. Interpersonal therapy helps them understand their relationships and how they fit into the world.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy

Teen issues like depression, social anxiety, and eating disorders often respond well to cognitive-behavioral therapy. Cognitive-behavioral therapy identifies thoughts as the root of teen issues. The therapist works with the teenager to help him or her identify problematic thinking patterns. Once the teen has identified distorted thoughts, he or she can counter them with logical statements that represent a more realistic perspective of themselves and the world.

The therapist will also help teens solve their issues by finding positive behaviors that will allow them to combat negative feelings that generate depression and anxiety. Over time, patients learn new thinking patterns that allow them to use a more positive perspective that leads to healthier behaviors.

Individual, Family, and Group Therapy for Teen Issues

Individual therapy gives teenagers the opportunity to talk to a counselor one-on-one. These sessions usually last about an hour, during which the therapist works with the client to develop useful strategies to overcome teen issues like eating disorders and depression.

Many teen issues, however, affect the entire family. In fact, many of them emanate from family dynamics that parents might not be able to see clearly. Family therapy gives everyone in the family a chance to discuss their issues and feelings in an honest, protected environment. Family therapy also helps counselors work with interpersonal relationships to build stronger, more honest connections between family members.

Group therapy can include family members and friends, but they are usually attended by people outside of the teenager’s everyday experience as well. Meeting with other teens who share their issues gives many young people a sense of support. It also helps them learn from the mistakes and triumphs of their peers who face similar problems.

Drug Therapy for Teen issues

Recent studies have found that antidepressants can encourage suicidal ideation in some teenagers. This means that teen issues treated with drug therapy should be closely monitored by a professional.
