Stress Management – How to Reduce It with

Stress is something that every person in the world experiences at one time or another. In fact, many people feel that their greatest achievements have come from stressful situations that demanded the absolute best from them. When stress becomes overbearing or chronic, though, stress management therapy can often help individuals learn the coping skills and relaxation techniques that that they need to live their lives without the burden of unhealthy stress.

Behavior Therapy

Behavior therapy has helped many people overcome excessive stress and anxiety by focusing on behaviors that exacerbate or cause negative feelings. For example, people who use avoidance strategies in an attempt to limit the amount of anxiety in their lives often end up generating even more stressful feelings. Behavior therapy helps these people learn how to alter their behaviors to reduce the amount of stress that they experience.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive-Behavioral therapy approaches stress management from the perspective of thoughts. This therapy has been very successful with patients suffering from a wide range of mental health problems such as depression and generalized anxiety disorder. Patients undergoing cognitive-behavioral therapy for stress management will learn to recognize thoughts that create stress in their lives and combat those thoughts with logical statements and positive behaviors. As individuals become more practiced at challenging distorted thoughts, they often become better at recognizing the thoughts before they cause significant unnecessary stress.

Drug Therapy

A high level of stress is often a symptom of depression, so some therapists choose to treat it with antidepressant medications. Drug therapy has proven itself effective for many patients with chronic stress and is especially useful when combined with psychoanalytic therapies. Some studies, however, have shown that medications like Zoloft and Prozac are only about as effective at relieving stress and depression as a regular exercise routine.

Stress management therapy should provide patients with lifelong tools that they can use to reduce stress and maintain good mental health. This often means making changes in areas of the patient’s life that produce stress and finding new outlets to work off some of the stress that accumulates throughout the day.

Most therapists will recommend a regular exercise program to help patients reduce their stress levels. Regular exercise also makes people feel more energized, which helps them meet their goals and tackle difficult problems without fatigue.

Stress management therapists often encourage their patients to try relaxation techniques like meditation as well.

Stress Management Therapies Use Various Techniques

Many stress management therapies use a variety of techniques to help individuals cope with negative feelings and find positive ways to channel their frustration. There are several different types of therapies, but not all of them work for every patient. Cognitive-behavioral therapy might produce great results for one patient without having much of an effect at all on another. Working with a stress management therapist over the course of several weeks or months will help individuals find techniques that work best for them.
